This colorful fanfare has become an integral part of our Thanksgiving holiday celebration. As we eagerly wait for this year’s 89th Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade let us go back in time and sneak a look at some of the most prized moments of this illustrious procession.
The year 1924 marked the beginning of historic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It was a procession of animals of the Central Park zoo that included elephants, camels, bears and lions that went from Herald Square to Harlem. Balloons were not introduced during that time.
It was in the year 1927 that the signature balloons became the part of Macy’s parade. Led by Felix, the Cat, balloons were let-off in the skyline after the parade was over and had addresses written on them. Those who delivered this balloon to their respective addresses were given rewards by Macy’s.
